Fukushima and Chernobyl Anniversaries

April 26, 1986, and February 11, 2011, are two dates that humanity will never forget. The nuclear power plants in Chernobyl, Ukraine, and Fukushima, Japan, experienced their worst-case scenarios — the maximum conceivable accidents — and the meltdown of their reactor cores. In light of these events, a rally and demonstration took place the day before yesterday, on Saturday, April 18, at the Brandenburg Gate, protesting the construction of new nuclear power plants in Germany, which the CDU/CSU has proposed and planned.

Since 2010, Aktion Freiheit statt Angst e.V. has been campaigning for an end to nuclear power in Germany. We do this not only because of the dangers of the technology, but also because of our core mission to promote a democratic, open, and transparent society. Even back then, we pointed out the connection “Nuclear State = Surveillance State” and cited as an example the Traube case uncovered by Der Spiegel in the 1980s: Dr. Klaus Robert Traube, a nuclear scientist and German citizen, was burglarized so that a listening device (“bug”) could be installed. The civil war-like police operations in Wackersdorf, Gorleben, ... also confirmed our equation “nuclear state = surveillance state”

That is why, on the 15th anniversary of Fukushima and the 40th anniversary of Chernobyl, we attended the joint event organized by the anti-nuclear movement on April 18, 2026, at the Brandenburg Gate. The speeches addressed current issues:

  • “No cost advantage over large nuclear power plants”: Federal Environment Ministry refutes alleged benefits of small, modular reactors
  • Market economy: Renewable energies are economically unbeatable
  • Endless dispute: CDU parliamentary group leader calls for “reactivation” of old nuclear power plants – SPD opposes – it’s time to draw a line under this!
  • Minimizing risks: No further Castor transports from Jülich to Ahaus
  • No reactivation of the Isar-2 nuclear power plant (which even the operator considers impossible)
  • EU subsidies for Polish nuclear power plant project are illegal
  • Weekly incidents even during the decommissioning of German nuclear power plants: April 14, 2026: Emsland plant: Corrosion found on a pipe in the auxiliary cooling water system, April 10, 2026: Reportable incidents at Philippsburg Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 and 2, March 30, 2026: Reportable barrel fell over, March 17, 2026: Philippsburg: Water tank leaking in the old nuclear power plant, ...
