12.06.2026 GEAS - die EU auf Abwegen

Almost speechless in the face of such contempt for humanity

Almost 15 years ago, we posted our refugee flyer online and distribute it as often as we can. The “current version” from 2019 is now in urgent need of an update with today’s entry into force of the CEAS, the Common European Asylum System. Our flyer stated:

Asylum is a fundamental right

Until 1993, the right to asylum for politically persecuted individuals was a fundamental right enshrined in the Basic Law for every single persecuted person. The CDU government at the time curtailed this fundamental right in violation of the refugee and human rights conventions binding under international law.

We already found the changes in our statements compared to the previous version from 2012 to be disheartening. With GEAS, it is not only a conservative German CDU emulating right-wing extremists that is turning its back on international law and human rights, but the entire EU as well. Ms. Leyen has forced the governments of 27 independent states to toe the line. At most, differences in individual countries can now be expected in the interpretation and daily application of the law.

What do the others say?

In this list, we have omitted views promoting far-right extremism and ethnic nationalism, and instead begin with the European Movement Germany e.V., which is closely aligned with the EPP Group in the European Parliament. At GEAS, it is primarily concerned about the “trade barriers” that Interior Minister Dobrindt and others have created, in part through the intergovernmental border controls they have pushed for, in order to keep pressure high on GEAS within the EU. “External border protection, due process, and open internal borders must not be played off against one another. For cross-border workers, commuters, businesses, and regions, freedom of movement is not an abstract ideal, but the living reality of the single market. Those who make internal border controls the norm undermine trust and daily life in Europe. That is why the current controls must be lifted as soon as possible. It is good that the European Commission is now also addressing this clearly."

The German Institute for Human Rights is even more explicit and condemns the German government’s GEAS Amendment Act from a human rights perspective. Points of criticism include:

  • Implementation of pilot border procedures even before 2026
  • Outsourcing of asylum procedures to safe third countries
  • Special reception facilities for Dublin procedures
  • Significant restrictions on the freedom of asylum seekers
  • Detention of children and vulnerable asylum seekers

The criticism from Amnesty International and Pro Asyl is far more fundamental. In the statement linked below, they have called on members of the German Bundestag to reject GEAS:
"Amnesty International and PRO ASYL appeal to the members of parliament not to approve the law in its current form. Both organizations warn of fundamental human rights violations and call for a revision of the law that respects human rights and, in particular, safeguards the freedom of movement of those seeking protection. Amnesty International and PRO ASYL appeal to the members of parliament not to approve the law in its current form. Both organizations warn of fundamental human rights violations and call for a revision of the law that respects human rights and, in particular, safeguards the freedom of movement of those seeking protection."

The specific points of criticism are outlined in the linked article and are so obvious that we do not wish to repeat them here. We will take note of which members of parliament voted in favor of this inhumane law.
