Who controls my cell phone?

AI is penetrating deep into the core of iPhone and Android systems, warns Telepolis.de in the article linked below, reporting that users can hardly decide for themselves how much control they want to relinquish. This applies to the built-in search assistant as well as to the search functions in various apps.

Since these features interact directly with AI, they often seem more effective than the queries users enter themselves into AI systems like ChatGPT. With the help of a searchable database created directly on the device, Siri, for example, “knows” “everything” from your text messages, calendar, and screen content. On the iPhone, there’s a “Learn from this App” feature in Settings that can still(!) be turned off. There, you can also still(!) choose whether chats should be stored permanently, for one year, or for 30 days and used for AI purposes. By default, these features are enabled.

The next pressing question is: What data is being transferred to the cloud? After all, it’s likely that storage space will become limited for local computations. This raises the follow-up question of who will then have access to such data. As EU citizens, we must immediately ask on what legal basis and for what purposes such data sharing should be permitted. As a precaution, Apple has named the process “Private Cloud Compute” (PCC) and emphasized the end-to-end encryption of the data. If an AI is rummaging through my data, then that’s not private!
