Autowarcom and Fascom

Excuse me? Following the establishment of the Space Command, the U.S. Department of Defense now plans to set up two additional command structures. First, there’s “Autowarcom,” an autonomous warfare command, and then “Fascom,” a separate command for future army and autonomous systems. Both point to significant changes:

More digitization and autonomy for the systems housed within these command structures — there is hardly any mention of humans anymore,

which means automation and autonomy (without supervision) ...

While Autowarcom is to be established at the level of the Department of War, Fascom is to become an Army command. U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth called for a revival of the American warrior spirit in late September, according to Telepolis.de. He does not seem to be counting the many wars the U.S. has started over the past 25 years. “To this end, the armed forces should no longer merely modernize individual weapons, but systematically advance the automation of warfare as a whole,” he added, as also quoted by Telepolis.de.

With Fascom, the U.S. Army will then attempt to drive automation forward through its own procurement division for autonomy, an advanced troop structure, and more positions for tactical drone specialists and robotics engineers. Both plans reveal a deep mistrust of the country’s own population. Processes are to be automated, and warfare is to be largely robotized in order to avoid domestic casualties and “war weariness” or reluctance.

These plans run counter to the UN’s attempt to prevent the automation of warfare. However, current U.S. policy stems not only from megalomania but is also a consequence of Ukraine’s drone war against Russia and the U.S. defeats in the Iran War and in Yemen, where “cheap” drones threaten — and in some cases even paralyze — U.S. capabilities.
