Largest Palestine demonstration in years For more than six hours, around 100,000 people took to the streets of Berlin in the largest and longest demonstration against the Israeli government's war crimes – the police counted 60,000 at one point. However, the Tagesspiegel newspaper writes: "A police spokeswoman did not rule out a higher number at around 7:30 p.m." Many participants only took part in parts of the demonstration between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. The article linked below provides a detailed account of the events. Aktion Freiheit statt Angst e.V. was there with several activists. We were pleased that several trade union groups, including GEW and IG Metall, also made their participation clear with banners. At the opening rally at the Neptune Fountain on Alexanderplatz, Jewish musician Michael Barenboim is among those who speak. He reports on the many deaths every day, on suffering and starving children, and on the lack of medical care. He compares the current situation to the Nakba (catastrophe), the expulsion and flight of around 700,000 Palestinians from their homeland in 1948. The party leader of the Left Party, Ines Schwerdtner, also sides with the demonstrators and says: "I understand your pain, because what is happening in Palestine is genocide." She went on to say: "Chancellors and ministers talk, but they don't act. They talk about ‘reasons of state’ while hospitals are being reduced to rubble. They remain silent about the genocide – and make themselves complicit." The fact of genocide has been established by UN bodies following their investigations, and the International Criminal Court in The Hague has also established this in its demand for the arrest of the Israeli Prime Minister. After the demonstration reaches the Großer Stern, a rally with many speakers and artists will begin there at 5 p.m. Jewish musician Michael Barenboim will speak again: "Israel's genocide is an attempt to destroy Palestine's past, present, and future." Former Green Party politician Basem Said called the Israeli military's actions "the systematic destruction of a people, stone by stone, body by body" and accused the German government of "glossing over the genocide" and criminalizing protests in Germany. Later in the program, presenter and actress Pegah Ferydoni, Riad Othman from the aid organization Medico International, rapper Massiv, and the Berlin hip-hop group "K.I.Z." spoke. The event ended with their songs "Görlitzer Park" and the well-known song "Hurra die Welt geht unter" (Hurray, the world is ending).
