Should we just let AI do it?

Michael Förtsch, editor-in-chief of 1E9, has shared many interesting thoughts on how we want to live with AI in the future in the linked article. We want to whet your appetite for reading with some of his key statements.

AI is increasingly viewed critically

  • KI flood the internet with rubbish
  • AI is making its way into almost all areas of life and work: offices, text, image, and video generation, programming support, autonomous traffic, ...

AI all over

It seems to us that AI is being forced upon us from all sides. Without responding to our needs, AI systems are simply being foisted upon us, such as in search engines. They are touted as performance boosters and money-saving tools. The article cites Google's AI mode in search, the writing tools on macOS, and the AI response functions on Reddit as examples. Supposedly intelligent, they get on our nerves as call center agents when we go round in circles with them during our calls to government agencies, health insurance companies, and businesses.

We can guess what lies ahead when Microsoft announces plans to convert Windows 11 into an "agent-based operating system" centered around ubiquitous AI assistants ...

AI Slop

"It's all rubbish" is the conclusion when you take a look at the vast amount of AI-generated texts, images, and videos posted on the internet. Apart from a few "gems" that might elicit admiration or a laugh, all that remains is rubbish. And a lot of computing time and energy has been wasted on this rubbish.

The first protests from users had already success. AI tools that have been integrated into their products without their consent were withdrawn or redesigned, such as the Copilot app installed without permission in smart TVs or the CoPilot variants in Windows, which have been deeply integrated into the system via updates in Explorer, the taskbar, and context menus.

AI as a surveillance tool

We don't need to say much about this, because we have hundreds of articles on the subject when you search for "AI+surveillance" or the notorious tool Palantir.

It is interesting to note that the linked article also asks whether intelligence agencies and police forces have ever bothered to compare the alleged advantages of AI with the amount of work required without AI. After all, there is no doubt that AI also produces a lot of junk here, in addition to a few random finds.

Added to this is the potential for abuse. The article cites the following example: A sheriff in Texas used data from more than 83,000 traffic cameras with automatic license plate readers from Flock Safety to track a woman who wanted to have an abortion, which is illegal in Texas, and drove to another state to do so.

Revolt against AI

People are slowly realizing that the further spread of AI will make millions of jobs redundant: designers, programmers, customer service representatives, taxi drivers, etc. On the one hand, this will lead to the impoverishment of large sections of the world's population, while at the same time large tech companies, including the Big 5 as developers of AI systems, will reap enormous wealth.

Many people already realize this injustice without drawing conclusions for their own actions. The billions invested in AI are still like inflating a giant bubble.

However, we will continue to point out the shortcomings and dangers of AI. We published a statement on this topic a month ago under the title “How to deal with artificial intelligence?”.
