Banks bow to US sanctions

It's hard to believe, but Sparkasse and GLS Bank have closed accounts simply because the associations or parties could fall under US sanctions. The banks have not confirmed this, citing "regulatory reasons" instead. The following parties are known to be affected so far:

  • Deutsche Kommunistische Partei (DKP)
  • die Gefangenenhilfsorganisationen der Rote Hilfe
  • Anarchist Black Cross Dresden

The DKP believes that the termination is due to its support for projects in Cuba that are directed against US sanctions. Rote Hilfe sees the reason as the classification of Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization by the US.

The social-ecological GLS Bank has now received an open letter from several thousand customers and citizens demanding the reversal of the "debanking". Excluding people or associations from owning an account renders them incapable of acting in real life. In summary proceedings against Sparkasse Göttingen, Rote Hilfe has succeeded in ensuring that the account termination remains invalid for the time being.
