Ban the AfD now!
More than 20,000 Berliners have already signed a petition calling on the House of Representatives to support a motion to ban the AfD. These signatures were handed over to Ms. Giffey yesterday. However, due to scheduling conflicts, her office postponed the handover of the signatures from 10:30 a.m. to after 4 p.m. As a result, the activists were able to pass the time in the morning by creating artistic street paintings. The group "Action Freedom Not Fear" was also present at the event in front of the Red City Hall.
"Never again" means banning the AfD now!
In the last election, the AfD achieved the highest election result in its history. According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), this was accompanied by a 50% increase in right-wing crimes. The AfD is a concrete threat to queer lives. Because other means have failed, the sharpest instrument of our constitution — the party ban — is called for.
It is doubtful whether the Berlin Senate will finally pick up the pace on this issue now that the signatures have been submitted. While the Left Party, the Greens, and the SPD at least want to discuss the problem posed by the AfD, the CDU believes there is a "need to take balanced action against both right-wing and left-wing extremists." The House of Representatives will address the issue in June. This will waste more valuable time, because as early as last August, a legal opinion by Markus Ogorek, director of the Institute for Public Law and Administrative Studies at the University of Cologne, was published, stating that the report by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution from last spring provides a solid basis for proceedings to ban the AfD: "The AfD report provides answers to questions that would also play a role in Karlsruhe. The Constitutional Court would also examine whether the AfD pursues policies contrary to the constitutional principles of human dignity, democracy, and the rule of law. ... Thus, the report offers a solid factual basis upon which Karlsruhe could build in a ban proceeding."
As Tagesschau.de further notes regarding the report: "Markus Ogorek’s report indicates that the concept of the people based on ethnicity could be central to banning the AfD. ... If a concept of the people based on "ethnic descent’ serves to deny people in Germany with a migrant background their "fundamental equality before the law,’ then that would constitute a violation of human dignity."
