Join our activities at May 1st
According to this morning’s news on Inforadio, over 50,000 of us gathered in Berlin yesterday to celebrate May Day, the workers’ movement’s day of struggle. For even though hardly anyone today considers themselves a “worker,” we still commemorate the courageous people who took to the streets en masse on May 1, 1856, in the Australian state of Victoria, and on May 1, 1886, in Chicago, to demand an 8-hour workday and other social improvements, and some of whom lost their lives in clashes with the police (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erster_Mai).
Things were far more peaceful in Berlin, but nevertheless, more and more people felt that the gap between rich and poor had widened in recent years. Everywhere, cuts to social services threaten us, and our money ends up in the hands of the super-rich or is squandered on so-called “war readiness” instead of being used for the peaceful development of humanity.
At a peaceful festival on Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg — organized by the Left Party in Berlin’s Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district — we set up a colorful information booth to distribute flyers on our causes and raise awareness about the deadly drone wars taking place around the world. We were able to display a quilt from the famous Drone Quilts exhibition and draw attention to the many innocent victims of drone wars. For the most part, the victims of drones are innocent civilians—according to research by the human rights organization “Reprieve,” an average of 28 innocent civilians are killed in an average of 28 innocent civilians are killed for one "high value target". We had a wonderful day with many visitors at Mariannenplatz and would like to thank the Left Party for continuing to organize this festival after the Berlin Senate withdrew several years ago. For official policymakers, the festival was merely a token event designed to pacify the alleged violence in Kreuzberg.
