Deployment of medium-range missiles — or not?

Since last year, Aktion Freiheit statt Angst e.V. has supported the Berlin Appeal “We say No to the deployment of new medium-range missiles in Germany!” and we have repeatedly called on people to sign it, as well as collecting signatures ourselves at our information booths. Now, President Trump has suddenly canceled their dangerous deployment in Germany and even plans to withdraw 5,000 U.S. soldiers.

Success or not?

It is not the success of the people who are fighting against irresponsible arms buildup and the squandering of our financial resources, but once again the completely detached power struggle between the EU and the U.S. The co-initiators of the Berlin Appeal—Reiner Braun, Executive Director of the International Peace Bureau; Michael Müller, Federal Chairman of the Friends of Nature in Germany; and Willi van Ooyen (Peace and Future Workshop) — stated the following the week before last:

We welcome the fact that the deployment of SM-6 missiles, Tomahawk cruise missiles, and Dark Eagle hypersonic missiles has been halted. This is also a success of the diverse protest actions, particularly the over 90,000 signatures on the Berlin Appeal.

This does not mark the end of the militarization and arms race in international politics. Driven by Trump, the world is in the grip of an arms race. Today it is clear how short-sighted it is that the German government — unlike the Spanish government — did not oppose the NATO decisions. Europe needs a pan-European security policy, not a new Cold War. That is the alternative our time needs.

Wir warnen besonders vor der weiteren atomaren Aufrüstung, den Ausbau des europäischen Atomwaffenschirms und der Gefahr einer "deutschen Bombe". Wir warnen davor zu glauben, dass mit den Ankündigungen von Trump die Frage der Mittelstreckenraketen vom Tisch sei. Die Stationierung der Mittelstreckenraketen in Grafenwöhr unter dem Kommando der "US-Army Europe and Africa" ist nämlich Teil der Neuordnung der amerikanischen Streitkräfte. ...

Wir müssen deshalb trotz aller Ankündigungen von Trump weitermachen mit unserem Widerstand gegen eine Stationierung der US-Mittelstreckenraketen in Deutschland oder Europa. Die Militarisierung verändert unsere Gesellschaft, sie soll "„kriegstüchtig" werden. Wir wollen, dass sie "friedensfähig" wird.

Berlin und Frankfurt am 3. Mai 2026
