Fair and safe AI in Germany
“Humanity's knowledge must belong to all of us!” was the topic of yesterday’s article, which addressed the theft of this knowledge by Big Tech corporations, who use it as training data for their AI systems.
We and others were addressing nearly the same issue at the FairnessJetzt rally yesterday afternoon in front of the Federal Chancellery. Under the slogan
Your Work – Your Future – Your Decision!
the rally participants called for the strengthening of workers’ rights and for the transformation driven by AI to be shaped fairly. People must be allowed to have a say in this, because AI is changing our world of work. Up to 60% of all jobs could be affected by this in the near future.
We cannot leave the future in the hands of a few U.S. corporations!
A large number of the rally participants came from artistic professions that are already under threat today — media technicians, voice actors, actors...
One voice actress reported that, due to her employer’s dependence on Netflix, she is being forced to sign an agreement allowing Netflix to use her voice for AI training. In other professional fields, this development is similarly advanced.
Millions of jobs are also set to be eliminated in the mass-production facilities of the so-called Third World. Workers on the assembly lines are forced to wear cameras on their foreheads while they work, so that their daily hand movements can be used as training data for AI. They receive no bonus for this — and certainly none afterward — and they cannot hope for unemployment benefits or a pension ...
FairnessJetzt.de demands:
AI has a profound impact on our social life. This requires a democratic response. How? With a legally binding citizens’ assembly on “Artificial Intelligence.” In it, randomly selected citizens will deliberate on the use of AI — and develop legally binding recommendations for policymakers.
Mr. Chancellor: Citizens’ assemblies are a proven tool for addressing challenging issues. Give the people of this country a voice on this important topic. Let us shape artificial intelligence democratically together.
This rally was the fourth event of the year, and there will be more to raise awareness about the dangers. On the FairnessJetzt.de website, you can sign up for upcoming events and sign a petition addressed to the federal government.
In conclusion, we at Freiheit statt Angst take away two key points:
- Rallies can be interesting and engaging if participants are skillfully drawn into the discussion and the results of these conversations are made accessible to everyone on stage.
- The results align with the demands outlined in yesterday’s article by Bernie Sanders — the expropriation of Big Tech — while also going beyond them. After all, all of humanity must have a say in where, how, and when artificial intelligence may be used, and in which areas (e.g., automatic weapons, ...) it certainly must not.
