Wifi recognizes people

A year ago, we already pointed out that it is possible to detect people even behind walls by analyzing changes in Wi-Fi radiation. What we considered a theoretical possibility back then has now been developed into a “feature” by Wi-Fi router manufacturers.

The U.S. provider Comcast is now introducing “WiFi Motion” in routers and other products for motion detection via Wi-Fi signals, according to an article on pcwelt.de linked here. Under the name “WiFi Motion,” the Wi-Fi router can be used as a surveillance device in the future. The device detects and registers signal disruptions caused by human movement and can record and report them. For now, the “Xfinity Shield” option can still be disabled in the router.

Some companies have already expressed interest. Beyond the ability to detect burglars early on, it would also be possible to track people’s behavior within a room. For example, the router could monitor comings and goings as well as behavior in the workplace. It will take some time for this to become a reality, as the data is still prone to errors — especially when multiple people are moving within the electromagnetic field.
