In response to our numerous articles on the new military service, we received several critical comments and even insults. The general sentiment of these messages was that we shouldn’t take away people’s enjoyment of the new military service. After all, everyone has the right to choose their own way of life. Even though we view killing or injuring other people as a crime rather than a personal lifestyle choice, we can now counter with the same arguments.

As Deutschlandfunk notes in the article linked below, it is by no means the case that the new military service is a fun and lighthearted affair. A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Defense told Deutschlandfunk that by the end of July, approximately 470 men who had previously refused military service had received a summons for a physical examination. According to the Ministry of Defense, this physical examination is already mandatory. Their “personal way of life” has just been destroyed.

There are still no nationwide conscription centers, but starting July 1, 2027, “all men in a given age group will be examined for their physical and mental fitness for military service upon turning 18,” reports Deutschlandfunk.

It was foreseeable that this would not remain a voluntary program, as the nearly 300,000 questionnaires sent out by the end of June resulted in only 530 volunteers for military service — a rate of 1.7 per thousand. The Bundeswehr’s last hope must now lie with the 4% of those contacted who have not yet responded. Hopefully, the Bundeswehr won’t scare off this last reserve with fines (end of irony).
