Security on Public Wi-Fi Networks

When you’re on the go, you can either use the “mobile data” from your own SIM card on your cell phone or laptop, or you can rely on the public Wi-Fi networks offered on public transportation or in cafés. However, these networks are not encrypted. That’s why you should think carefully beforehand about what you do on them. If you only use encrypted services yourself, you’re almost certainly on the safe side.

However, before the device connects to the requested page via an encrypted “https” connection, it must first determine the IP address at which that page is located on the Internet. This is handled by the Domain Name Service (DNS). These queries are typically unencrypted. However, DNS-over-TLS is a good option, as it uses the same encryption as websites.

On Android devices, this feature is available starting with Android 9 Pie and should be used. T3n recommends: On Pixel devices, users should open Settings, go to “Network & Internet,” and look for the “Private DNS” feature, which may also be found under “Advanced” depending on the device. On Samsung devices, the option is located under “Settings,” “Connections,” and “Additional connection settings.” It’s important to note, however, that DNS queries can only be encrypted if the requested DNS service supports this feature. Therefore, security may still be compromised.
