Where is the outcry?
The Outer Space Treaty, also known as the Outer Space Treaty (OST), entered into force on October 10, 1967. To date, 117 states have ratified the Outer Space Treaty, including nearly all states currently engaged in space activities. It took the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space many years to negotiate the treaty. According to the text of the treaty, no nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction may be placed in outer space (Art. IV), and the use of outer space must be limited to peaceful purposes. No military bases may be established, nor may military exercises be conducted, in outer space or on the Moon.
The U.S. has now officially confirmed for the first time that it has deployed weapons in space. This was, unfortunately, to be expected after Trump established a Space Command (US Space Force) by Trump 8 years ago. According to US media, Under Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink has officially confirmed the deployment of weapons in space for the first time, calling it a warning to Russia and China. The US military wants to have the capability to destroy enemy satellites if necessary.
So far, only China’s Foreign Ministry has called for a halt to the arms race in space. Where is the outcry from the UN and the 117 signatory states to the Outer Space Treaty? And what does the EU have to say about this, given that it always seeks to present itself as a defender of the “values-based order”? It should be clear that following a unilateral breach of the treaty by the U.S., other countries will follow this disastrous example. We all understand what a failure of our space-based communications — and especially of early-warning systems — would mean: the hands of the Doomsday Clock would once again move again toward midnight.
