Offline with eSIM is not offline
Cryptocurrency owners who want to keep their assets particularly secure often prefer to use hardware wallets instead of software wallets on their smartphones or laptops. One of these hardware wallets, the French Ledger Nano X, has now cost some crypto speculators their money.
Heise.de reports in the linked article that some of the hardware wallets in question — presumably those purchased through Cryptobilis, a wallet retailer based in Malaysia and operating primarily in Southeast Asia — were tampered with using additional hardware. They contained an eSIM card that allowed the keys displayed on the small screen to be transmitted via LTE to eavesdroppers.
The total loss from the more than 300 affected wallets is estimated at approximately 93 million U.S. dollars. Owners of the Ledger Nano X should consider where they purchased the device and whether it may have been shipped via Malaysia. Upon opening the case, nothing unusual is noticeable aside from a small antenna wire.
