Global Encryption Day

Every October 21th is “Global Encryption Day,” and that's why we're celebrating again today with everyone who has been keeping their data well-encrypted for years and who communicates with each other using only end-to-end encryption. Everyone else is invited to join in. To demonstrate the necessity of encryption to “others,” there is “Play Unencrypted – The Game”.

You can also participate in the “Global Encryption Day Summit 2026.” This summit is taking place online today from 2:40 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. UTC. You can register here Register to participate.

On their website, the organizers, i.e. the Mozilla Foundation, explain the need for encryption: Strong encryption is a fundamental part of how we stay secure, private, and connected in an increasingly digital world. It enables people to communicate, share information, manage their finances, access services, and interact online with the confidence that their conversations and data remain protected from tampering, surveillance, or unauthorized access. End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is the gold standard for securing these interactions and helps preserve the trust that underpins modern digital life.

Yet around the world, policies of states and companies continue to threaten to undermine encryption and often portray it as a challenge to law enforcement. While concerns about online harms are real, systematically eroding the security and privacy of billions of people is not the solution; it will only put people at greater risk.
