Too dangerous for the public

... is reportedly the new AI model “Mythos” from the company Anthropic. That is why the company is keeping it under wraps and, as part of an initiative called Project Glasswing, is only allowing a select group of companies working in IT security to use the system to search for software vulnerabilities. That was the report on Heise.de in early April, after the system had allegedly already identified thousands of high-risk zero-day vulnerabilities.

This was likely not a marketing strategy on the company’s part, as we, too, noticed a sharp increase in the number of updates on our Linux server. While we usually receive 1–2 updates per week, there were 48 in a single day in May. Things are back to normal now, but just imagine if “malicious” hackers were to tamper with it. Wait a minute, who says the companies invited to Project Glasswing are the good guys?

Transfer AI companies to state ownership

This proposal, which is quite bold by U.S. standards, comes from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. Strictly speaking, he wants to transfer only half — that is, 50% — of the companies’ ownership to public hands. Dividends from the profits generated by this ownership would then be paid out to U.S. citizens. To this end, he plans to introduce the “American A.I. Sovereign Wealth Fund Act.” The bill calls for a one-time 50 percent tax — not on the profits of major AI companies, but on their shares. Among those affected would be OpenAI, Anthropic, and Elon Musk’s xAI, writes Telepolis.de.

Bernie Sanders does not justify his proposal by citing a desire to introduce socialism in the U.S., but rather with a perfectly logical argument: “AI models have been trained on the ‘collective knowledge of humanity’ — on books, music, journalism, scientific research, and billions of everyday conversations. This knowledge has largely been incorporated into the models without permission, acknowledgment, or compensation.”

This argument is even supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who has acknowledged that AI builds on the “collective experiences [...] and insights of humanity.” The project would not be new either, as the Norwegian sovereign wealth funds — financed by oil revenues — and the Alaska Permanent Fund operate in a similar manner and generate high returns.

Activists worldwide are also calling for democratic oversight of major tech companies, particularly with regard to AI. Also Pope Leo XIV has declared AI to be the social issue of the 21st century and, in his encyclical ”Magnifica Humanitas,“ demanded that the technology must be ”disarmed," Telepolis reports. And some (smaller) AI companies are at least showing understanding for Sanders’ arguments. But given the current balance of power in the U.S. Congress and the media, which already labels every liberal a communist, Musk and Co. have nothing to worry about...
