What's the harm in negotiating?
On Freidenker.org, there is a discussion about what and who is behind the “peace talks” in Baku. News of the talks broke when Azerbaijan’s autocratic president, Ilham Aliyev, stated at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin on July 21, 2026, that secret talks between German and Russian politicians had taken place in his own capital, Baku. Since Chancellor Merz had denied such talks just minutes earlier, the scandal was perfect.
Ronald Pofalla, the former CDU Minister of the Chancellery, was present — and certainly not without Merz’s knowledge. In doing so, Merz condoned what he had rejected at the EU level. At the EU summit in Brussels (June 18–19, 2026), Merz had “reprimanded” Costa — or, in effect, halted and sabotaged the initiative. The contacts that had already been established were limited to two brief, substance-free conversations. How and whether this will proceed remains unclear ...
