Hands Off Cuba – End the Embargo!

In light of the military and economic threats posed by the U.S. government, the Federal Committee for Peace (Bundesausschuss Friedensratschlag) declares its unconditional solidarity with Cuba. The full statement can be read in the article linked below. The Cuban people fight daily for their dignity and sovereignty against the barbaric blockade. The coercive measures (“sanctions”) and harassment — which have violated international law for years — have, by their very nature, no other goal than to bring about regime change in Cuba through economic coercion.

By a vote of 187 to 2 against injustice, the UN General Assembly has opposed the U.S. sanctions, but the U.S. persists in its claim to power in violation of international law. Cuba, on the other hand, stands for strict adherence to international law, for peace, diplomacy, and international friendship. The Federal Committee for Peace therefore also demands that the EU and the German federal government adhere to international law!

We have received a resolution on the topic of Cuba from the ASten NRW, issued by the meeting of all physics student councils (ZaPF). This resolution identifies the specific problems and also calls for an end to the illegal sanctions:

In February of this year, the Trump administration further tightened the blockade against Cuba — a violation of international law that has persisted for over six decades. Even before this tightening, the blockade had enormous economic, social, health, and educational consequences for the Cuban people. Now, with the oil embargo, a severe energy and supply crisis has set in, and a humanitarian catastrophe looms.

Nationwide power outages are causing hospital patients to suffocate due to the failure of ventilators. Without power, there are problems with the refrigeration of food and medicine, as well as with telephone and internet connections. Due to the fuel shortage, waste disposal is only possible to a limited extent. Classes at schools and universities have been canceled.

As ZaPF, we feel compelled to take a stand against this aggression by the United States against Cuba. Not only because the blockade constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and human rights and thus, in accordance with Article 25 of the Basic Law, concerns everyone. We are taking a stand because this aggression also specifically targets the achievements that have already been made in Cuba — achievements that we, as ZaPF, still have to fight for. These include an education system that is free for all and is given high social priority.

ZaPF quotes the country report by the German Academic Exchange Service: “From kindergarten through a doctoral degree, the use of educational institutions remains free of charge for Cubans. In keeping with a humanistic educational ideal, access to education is regarded as a human right that must not be subject to commercialization.

According to the World Bank, the Cuban government invests nearly 13 percent of its GDP in education — more than any other country in the world. [...] Cuba [is] the only country in Latin America to have achieved the goals of UNESCO’s “Education for All” program.

Science is an inherently cooperative and international endeavor. Thus, the blockade of Cuba not only constitutes an attack on the Cuban people, but also targets the vanguard of an internationalist approach to science.
