Germany: Neutral!

On the afternoon of October 24, more than 150 people gathered at the Löwenpalais in Berlin for over five hours to discuss ways to reduce the risk of war in Europe through a neutral Germany. Activists from Aktion Freiheit statt Angst e.V. were also in attendance.

The organizers, who had accepted Uli Gellermann’s invitation and presented their ideas for discussion, were the same people who had published the book *Deutschland neutral* in the spring. Among them were

The discussion began with the observation that the threat of war in Europe is growing. State neutrality, it was argued, would offer a way out of this danger. Even those who were skeptical about the feasibility of this solution were certain that the path toward German neutrality was already a step in the right direction.

The speeches from the event can be viewed on Uli Gellermann’s website, the Rationalgalerie. At the end of the event, attendees discussed a manifesto for German neutrality. The adopted text reads:

Get out of NATO!
Manifesto for German Neutrality
The Basic Law provides for the defense of one’s own country.
But through NATO, German soldiers were deployed to other countries, such as Yugoslavia.
Did Yugoslavia attack us? No.
NATO was in Afghanistan; Germany was part of it.
Did Afghanistan attack the Federal Republic of Germany? No.
As part of this “forward presence,” a German brigade has been stationed in Vilnius, Lithuania, since December 2023.
Vilnius is only about 30 kilometers from the border with Belarus, a close ally of Russia. The distance from Vilnius to the direct Russian border (with the Kaliningrad exclave in western Lithuania) is approximately 200 kilometers.
Has a German Parliament agreed to that? No.Minister Pistorius calls this brigade “combat-ready.” Against whom does the German defense minister intend to wage “effective” war?
The NATO Treaty and the “Treaty on the Stationing of Foreign Armed Forces in the Federal Republic of Germany” must be terminated immediately!
Our country must stay out of NATO’s wars.
Germany must become neutral.
Because that is the only way we can secure peace—for ourselves and our neighbors.
