In addition, we would like — once again - to recall the Allied Police Directive of 1948. In it, the occupying powers demanded a strict separation between the police and intelligence services for German authorities. Not only is this principle now being abolished, but cooperation on operations beyond mere intelligence gathering is even being defined as a goal.

Yet, following the totalitarian Nazi state, there was never to be another Secret State Police. The fact that such a body will emerge is inevitable due to the disparity in oversight. On one side are police authorities with a reasonably clear hierarchy and oversight; on the other, an opaque network of intelligence structures that may have to justify themselves after 2–3 years at the earliest. Future far-right state and federal governments will be seated directly at the table without having to get their hands dirty. This sends a disastrous signal just four weeks before the upcoming state elections.
