Chat Monitoring for the umpteenth time
“We just have to vote often enough; eventually, the result will suit us.” That seems to be the European Commission’s view, because chat monitoring has now been rejected as unsuitable so many times that one can only shake one’s head in disbelief. And now, under the pretext of child protection, the European Union has finally enshrined total surveillance of digital communication into law.
No one is exempt from surveillance
Of course, no one will be allowed in the future to use the internet without age verification — after all, it could be a child. There have already been several votes against this surveillance madness; see our earlier articles on the topic:
- 09.11.2021 Unschuldsvermutung wird abgeschafft
- 16.06.2022 Keine Überwachung unserer Kommunikation
- 01.08.2022 EU-Datenschutzbehörden lehnen Chat-Kontrolle ab
- 13.09.2022 Wende bei der Chatkontrolle?
- 14.02.2023 EU-Chatkontrolle gegen Open Source - Will die EU gerade Linux verbieten?
- 03.04.2023 EU-Chatkontrolle benötigt eine VDS
- 08.07.2023 Wissenschaftler erklären Chat-Kontrolle für wirkungslos
- 22.09.2023 EU-Rat vertagt Abstimmung zur Chatkontrolle
- 14.11.2023 Europol will mehr Chatkontrolle
- 24.12.2024 Auch Ungarn ist mit Chat-Kontrolle gescheitert
- 13.09.2025 WissenschaftlerInnen gegen Chatkontrolle
- 11.11.2025 Chatkontrolle künftig "freiwillig"?
- 26.02.2026 Chatkontrolle als Verordnung
The linked article states: “The proposed regulation had already failed in the European Parliament back in March. But instead of respecting the vote, Parliament President Roberta Metsola resorted to somewhat underhanded tactics: She called on the member states to submit a nearly identical proposal so it could be put to a vote again in July.”
So what exactly is “law”?
- Mass scanning of images, videos, and texts from all users as a form of preventive surveillance.
- The core of communication privacy on the internet is being destroyed, except for a few well-encrypted messaging apps like Signal and Threema.
- Data sovereignty is being handed over to the monopolies; “personal data is effectively becoming the property of large corporations in close cooperation with bourgeois states,” writes the newspaper "Die Zeitung der Arbeit".
This is because surveillance is to be carried out by Big Tech corporations, which will in the future be “responsible” for ensuring that child and youth protection laws (by us) are upheld. This undermines all data protection regulations in the EU, as Big Tech becomes the enforcer of our collective good behavior. No one knows how this regulation may be translated to national laws.
